This Is Why You Should Turn A Bathroom Light On When Sleeping at a Motel or Motel

Travel hacks can make trips smoother, especially for those who travel often for work or fun. Pilots and flight attendants, who spend plenty of time on the road, often share tips online. One pilot shared a simple hack for better sleep when staying in unfamiliar places.

A Pilot’s Sleep Hack

Pilot Ron Wagner shared on Quora that many people feel disoriented when waking up in new places, especially frequent travelers. He suggests leaving the bathroom light on with the door slightly open. The small amount of light helps travelers quickly adjust to their surroundings and avoid confusion during the night.

Wagner explained, “I once woke up in total darkness and couldn’t figure out where I was. I didn’t know the layout of the room or where to find the bathroom.” The bathroom light trick provides enough visibility to stay oriented without being too bright to disturb sleep.

Wagner added that the hack doesn’t need to involve the bathroom light. Any light source, such as a small lamp or a gap in the curtains, works just as well. This slight adjustment can prevent the feeling of waking up confused or lost.

Though not a medical term, sleep disorientation—also called confusional arousal—occurs when parts of the brain wake up while others remain asleep. Symptoms can include confusion, staring, or slurred speech. While brief, these episodes can feel unsettling.

Extra Travel Tips

Wagner’s advice is one of many helpful tips shared by airline employees. Some other travel hacks include:

Keep Valuables Close – Never pack important items, like passports or expensive belongings, in checked luggage.

Prepare a Financial Backup – Always have extra money for unexpected costs like delayed flights or last-minute hotel stays.

Bring a Power Strip – Useful at airports where outlets are limited.

Write Down Addresses – Save important details on paper or in your phone in case Wi-Fi isn’t available.

Pack Smart – Roll clothes to save space, a method favored by both flight attendants and military personnel.

These practical tips ensure smoother, less stressful travel experiences.
